A lot of people have no idea what they want to do, or where they are at especially at university. It’s to be expected and it is part of your life journey!
— Mona, Go Girl's Artist

Go Girl chatted to our very own Artistic genius, Mona about her journey from school to now, what she learnt along the way, and who she’s become. Mona is passionate about digital arts, and marketing and it was great for her to think about when she was in school, and what advice she’d give to her younger self. Mona has made it her life’s work to inspire others into a career in digital arts, and hopes to inspire other Go Girls!

Go Girl Interview with Mona

Tell us about yourself? What do you enjoy?

My hobbies include poetry, running, hiking and walks with my dog.

What subjects did you like in high school?

I really enjoyed Mathematics (especially Statistics), and Sciences (Physics, Biology & Chemistry). However funnily enough, I wasn’t drawn to Arts & Drama Studies in school.

When did you realise you wanted to do in your career?

When doing my Masters, I realised I didn’t want to be a science researcher and took a break as I didn’t know what I wanted to do. After travelling and working overseas for four years, I joined a biotech startup when I returned home. It was at this role which gave me the autonomy and trust from senior leaders that I started my career in marketing. I put my hand up to do social media, communications, PR and digital marketing as it needed to be done. I felt it came naturally to me. Rather than going back to University, I focussed on taking relevant short courses and spent a lot of time self-learning in marketing, and learnt a lot on the job. I feel my Science background and "thinking" helped a lot in my approach to marketing throughout my career.

Who inspires you?

Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech, inspires me. She has a background in chemical engineering and is still one of the few females in a male dominated industry especially at a leadership level. Dr Holmgren is not a typically loud person and a big personality that you see most CEOs have. She is intelligent, considered and she is so engaging and always captures the room; she works very hard, and is also very humble.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Trust your gut instinct that you are making the right choices for yourself. Follow the things that you enjoy as there are so many pathways' things can take. Also, find yourself mentors and sponsors. If I had better mentors in high school and/or University, and sponsors in the workplace, I could have fast tracked a lot of my learning I did on my own, and it would have helped me with various opportunities and opened doors for me earlier on.
